What You'll Learn in IB English A & B Courses

The International Baccalaureate (IB) English programme is offered in three courses: English Language and Literature A, English Literature A, & English B.

Each course has a different focus and specific areas of study.

English Language and Literature A:

This course combines the study of language and literature, with an emphasis on the analysis of various texts, including literary, non-literary, and media texts. Students are expected to develop skills in critical analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of the texts they encounter. In addition, this course requires students to produce written tasks and oral presentations, as well as sit for exams that test their knowledge and understanding of the course material.

English Literature A:

This course focuses solely on the study of literary works, including works in translation. Students are required to read and analyse a variety of literary works, such as poetry, drama, and novels, and develop an understanding of literary conventions and techniques. This course also requires students to produce written tasks and oral presentations, as well as sit for exams that test their knowledge and understanding of the course material.

English B:

This course is designed for students who have a good foundation in English but are not native speakers. It aims to develop students’ language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with an emphasis on communicative competence. Students are expected to develop an understanding of language as a tool for communication and learn how to use it effectively in a range of contexts. This course also requires students to produce written tasks and oral presentations, as well as sit for exams that test their language proficiency and understanding of the course material.

Assessment in IB English courses includes coursework elements, written exams, and oral assessments. The written exams typically consist of a variety of tasks, including essay writing, textual analysis, and comparative analysis. The oral assessments involve individual presentations, group discussions, and interviews.

At All Round Education Academy, our IB English tutors are experienced and qualified in teaching all three courses in HK. They provide individualised attention and a learner-centred approach to teaching, focusing not only on exam skills and English Language & literature techniques but also on the development of a solid knowledge base and the integration of various skill sets. Our tutors use past papers, top-scoring answers, and examiners’ reports to help students understand what examiners are looking for and how to achieve top grades. With the help of our expert tutors, students can excel in their IB English exams and achieve their academic goals.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About IB English Tutors in HK

What's the fastest way to improve Paper 1 analysis?

Practise with timed commentaries using past Paper 1s and model answers. Our IB English tutor HK team will teach you how to structure your response, integrate literary techniques, and develop insightful interpretations under pressure.

How do you choose texts for Paper 2 comparisons?

We select texts based on thematic overlap, complexity, and relevance to your exam syllabus. Your IB English tutor in Hong Kong will guide you in pairing texts that enable strong comparative arguments and deep literary analysis.

What counts as a 'global issue' for IO?

A global issue should transcend borders and affect societies broadly. Examples include gender inequality, identity and culture, or the impact of technology on communication, all of which are commonly explored in Paper 1 or 2 texts.

How is the HL Essay marked?

The HL Essay is marked based on five criteria: focus, knowledge and understanding, analysis and evaluation, organisation, and language. Our IB English tutors help students meet these requirements with structured planning and iterative feedback.

Do you teach English B and prepare for the oral exam?

Yes. Our Hong Kong IB English tutor team covers all aspects of English B, including reading comprehension, essay writing, and oral assessments. We help students build fluency, accuracy, and confidence for the speaking component.

Can I attend both online and in-centre lessons?

Absolutely. You can choose to work with our tutors online, in-centre (Central on HK Island or TST in Kowloon), or combine both based on your schedule and preference. Flexibility is a key part of our IB English programme.

What is the difference between IB English Literature and IB English Language and Literature?

IB English Literature focuses only on literary texts such as novels, poetry, and plays. Students learn how to analyse themes, characters, and writing techniques in detail.

IB English Language and Literature studies both literary works and non-literary texts such as advertisements, speeches, news articles, and media content. Students explore how language is used in different social and cultural contexts. An IB English tutor in Hong Kong can help students understand the focus of each course.

What skills are important for success in IB English?

Students need strong reading and analysis skills to understand texts and explain their ideas clearly. Writing organised essays and using examples from the text are also important.

Time management is helpful during exams since students must analyse texts and write responses within a limited time. An IB English tutor in HK can help students practise these skills with past papers and guided exercises.

How can an IB English tutor help improve my results?

An IB English tutor in HK provides guidance based on a student’s learning needs. Tutors help students improve essay writing, strengthen text analysis, and prepare for Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Individual Oral.

Regular practice and feedback from an IB English tutor in Hong Kong help students gain confidence and improve their exam performance.

What is the difference between English A: Literature and English A: Language and Literature?

  • English A: Literature focuses only on literary works such as novels, poetry, and drama.
  • English A: Language and Literature studies both literary and non-literary texts, such as media and speeches. An IB English tutor in Hong Kong can help students decide which course suits their strengths.

Should I take IB English at Standard Level or Higher Level?

Higher Level includes more class time and an extra HL Essay of about 1,200 to 1,500 words.

Students who enjoy writing and analysing texts may prefer HL. Standard Level is suitable for many students and university courses. An IB English tutor in HK can help students choose the right level.

Do universities prefer IB English Literature over Language and Literature?

Most universities accept both courses. Students should choose the one that matches their interests and skills.

An IB English tutor in Hong Kong can also guide students on subject choices and exam preparation.

What are the main IB English exam components?

Students usually complete Paper 1, which involves analysing an unseen text, and Paper 2, which is a comparative essay on texts studied in class.

Higher Level students also write the HL Essay. Students must also complete the Individual Oral, where they discuss a literary and a non-literary text linked to a global issue. An IB English tutor in HK can help students prepare for each assessment.
